Local group aiming to bring over second Syrian family

The Bulkley Valley Refugee Sponsorship Group has set a new goal after such a positive response from the community.

The Group’s initial goal was to bring one Syrian family over from a Lebanese refugee camp. After $11,000 was raised at a fundraiser on Saturday, the group is now aiming to bring a second family to the Bulkley Valley.

When asked about recent events in Europe, Group spokesperson Pauline Mahoney said we should help refugees trying to escape the terror.

“I don’t truly understand the fear,” she says, “it’s horrible what’s happened in Paris and Lebanon and in Syria and these countries, but the reality is there are millions of people on the move, who are innocent, and they just want a safe place to be.”

School children are even getting in on the activism. Muheim school will hold a bake sale Tuesday in support of the refugees.

The Group has now raised about 30,000 for the family.
