Smithers Chamber launches new campaign to “Buy Canadian”

The Smithers Chamber of Commerce recently started a new campaign to help encourage shopping Canadian.

This is in partnership with Randy’s Image Design who are selling the new “Buy Canadian” lawn signs.

“At the heart of the chamber network is a commitment for advocating for local businesses and a thriving Canadian economy,” said Chamber Executive Director Sheena Miller.

The initiative was in part a response to the looming US tariffs on Canadian goods expected to start on Tuesday.

“Every dollar that you spend is a vote for the kind of economy you want to see. When you choose local, you’re not just making a purchase. You’re investing in your community,” Miller added.

She added the need to reinforce the idea of shopping locally was needed, especially with the number of Amazon packages she’s seen being picked up at the post office.

“There’s lots of people spending online and you can’t get away from that for certain products or niche items but at the end of the day, how much of our money can we keep in our local economy,” Miller said.

When spending $100, she said $68 remains within the local community when spent at a local store while $43 stays when spent at a multi-national chain.

The chamber also recently launched a new business directory to help find and discover local businesses in Smithers.

The signs can be purchased at Randy’s Image Design.
