Houston is setting up to name their Woman of the Year on Saturday.
This coincides with their annual International Women’s Day event happening at the Houston Community Hall.
“This year we have a guest speaker from Thailand who will join us via video conferencing and share how she has been helping women in Thailand get off the streets and out of poverty,” said co-organizer Cindy Verbeek.
“Houston Community Services will also share what they do and give us some tips on self-defense.”
The event started in 2011 to help celebrate women in the community featuring workshops open to everyone, and a free dinner for women only.
“This year we are able to open it up to 150 because of a partnership with Community Services who got a grant to do it,” said Verbeek.
She added the Woman of the Year is, “a woman who volunteers tirelessly for the good of our community.”
Included with the title is 12 dozen long stem roses, a gift certificate for Houston merchant dollars and a trophy with her name on it.
“A selection committee spends hours reading over and deliberating over who should be this year’s woman if the year. Many of the nominees are caught off guard when we ask them to stand and are so appreciative to have their work recognized,” Verbeek said.
Nominations can be submitted online before tomorrow (Wednesday) at noon.
The workshops start Saturday afternoon at 1:00 with the dinner starting at 5:00.
Tickets for the dinner can be claimed for free at the Houston Chamber of Commerce or online.
