Smithers creates new bike registry to reduce thefts

The Town of Smithers is working to make bike theft a thing of the past.

They recently partnered with Project 529 to create a new bike registration initiative designed to help reunite stolen bikes with their owners.

“We know how frustrating it is for residents to lose a bike, and we want to help get them back to their rightful owners,” said Community Safety Officer (CSO) Carl Chad.

“By working with local bike shops and the RCMP, our goal is to make it easier for our community to protect their bikes and recover them if they go missing.”

According to the town, numerous bikes are recovered annually by CSOs and police with many going unclaimed.

They hope residents will register their bike so it can be returned if it goes missing.

Project 529 is an internationally recognized database used by over 400 law enforcement agencies, universities, bike clubs, and bike shops worldwide.

You can register your bike on Project 529’s website.
