Houston cafe stops serving Americanos

The Palisades Cafe in Houston is now serving Canadianos in place of Americanos.

This was inspired by the Kicking Horse Cafe in Invermere who started using the name 16 years ago.

Palisades Owner Elizabeth Watson said the change was made as a nod to Canadian pride.

“I thought that was a great train to hop on, so we did that and due to the timing and how prevalent this Canadian vs American topic is, it gained a lot of attraction quite quickly,” she said.

Watson added most cafes, including the Palisades, are only changing the name but she has seen some alterations like adding maple syrup to the drink.

“We’re seeing people have a chuckle, take a picture, ask questions, so we’re getting a lot of in person interaction surrounding it,” she said.

Watson didn’t know how the US tariffs could impact their shop but said their suppliers are all Canadian.

She also said there is currently no plan to change the name back to Americano.
