Burns Lake looks to buy Canadian

The Village of Burns Lake will be looking to buy Canadian goods and services first.

This was part of an amendment to their Purchasing Procedures at last night’s (Tuesday) village council meeting.

“We’ve always bought local whenever possible in the past and one of the councilors suggested because of all the rumors and tariffs on the US side, that we should start looking at not just buying local but buying Canadian wherever possible,” said Mayor Henry Wiebe.

He added the impact of choosing Canadian products over American for the village aren’t known and sourcing from outside the country will still be required.

“As far as the process goes, there was no opposition,” said Wiebe.

According to the staff report, this is also part of the greater “Buy Canadian” push from several levels of government in response to the US economic threats.

“I think other municipalities would probably follow suit and it’s a good thing to do anyway without the tariff threats,” Wiebe added.

He sees the amendment remaining part of the purchase policy after tariff threats are lifted.
