High Speed Internet lands in Fort Babine

Residents in Fort Babine, about 100 kilometers north of Smithers, now have access to high-speed internet and improved cellular service.

This was funded by a $2 million grant through the Northern Development Initiative Trust and $230,000 from Telus who built and is operating the service.

“Reliable cellular coverage and high-speed internet access are vital for safety, economic opportunities and staying connected with family wherever you live in the province,” said George Chow, Minister of Citizens’ Services.

According to the province, this allows 47 households access to the improved internet service and improves access to emergency services.

Almost six kilometres on Fort Babine Road also received improved cell coverage along Babine Lake.

“We are grateful to Telus and the Government of British Columbia for helping to bring our remote community into the digital age,” said Chief Wilfred Adam of the Lake Babine Nation.

“The completion of this project will improve safety in Fort Babine and ensure people can stay informed and connected like never before.”

This is part of the province’s push to expand connectivity having invested $584 million into projects since starting in 2017.
