A letter was written to Smithers council wishing the US flag on Main Street be removed considering threats made by President Donald Trump.
During discussions by council at Tuesday night’s meeting, it was decided the flag would remain.
“I don’t support taking the flag down because I think that wouldn’t help anything and there is one person causing chaos in the US, not everybody,” said Councillor Sam Raven.
She added removing the flag would require conversation about what other flags would need to be removed which Raven didn’t want to go down.
Councillor Frank Wray added the flags along Main Street and Third Avenue are meant to make people feel welcome.
“I don’t want people coming from the US to visit us to not feel welcome,” he added.
Mayor Gladys Atril said the actions the US government has taken were “inexcusable.”
“I also recognize lots of American people don’t support the direction the government has taken,” she added.
