More time is needed before childcare spaces in Smithers can be expanded.
In July last year, council sent an application to the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund for a new childcare facility at Ranger Park.
“We know many families were looking forward to this project, and we recognize that access to childcare remains a significant challenge in Smithers,” said Mayor Gladys Atrill.
According to the town, there were more applicants this year than available funds and they are committed to making another application for the next round.
Work to revise the facility designs and potentially a new location for the project is being looked at by the town to reduce its cost.
“While this outcome is disappointing, we remain committed to finding solutions and securing funding to support local families,” Atrill said.
The new facility would have opened an additional 74 childcare spaces in Smithers and been operated by the YMCA of Northern BC.
