Guide dog graduation spells new friendship

It won’t be long before a local blind man graduates alongside his new guide dog.

Sieghard Weitzel has had guide dogs for over twenty years now. His current dog, “Mulligan” is set to retire, leaving an opening for Weitzel’s next helper.

He has about one week of training left with 19-month-old “Radar,” and he says in the few days they’ve known each other, they’ve gotten along well.

“I really, really like him,” he says, “I like his personality, I like his enthusiasm, and his friendliness and he’s just a really, really cool dog and really a that is not very difficult to like.”

BC Guide Dog mobility instructor Jaime Arnup played matchmaker and brought the two together. She explains why the two are a perfect fit.

“When we were going through the different traits that Radar has when we were really thinking about matching, somebody who could challenge him and keep up with him and Sieghard is really one of the few people on our list that fit that bill,” she says.

Radar will be Weitzel’s third guide dog, and he plans to take him on adventures like cross-country skiing and white water rafting.
