Bulkley Valley, Lakes District lacked rain through March

March in the Bulkley Valley and Lakes District was dry and warm according to Environment Canada.

Meteorologist Chris Doyle compared weather in the region to that of Mexico because of how dry the month was.

“Smithers, normal precipitation in March would be 19.7 millimetres. Last month, it was 4.7 which was the driest March since 1938,” he said.

The mean temperature was 0.3 degrees, warmer compared to the –0.3 degree normal.

A year prior, the mean temperature was 0.8 degrees with 10.9 millimetres of rain.

In the Lakes District, 13.3 millimetres of precipitation was recorded with a mean temperature of –0.4 degrees.

Normal temperature and precipitation for the Lakes were not provided.

More sunshine is expected through the rest of the week with temperatures potentially reaching the high teens with occasional wind.

“This poses a localized grass fire risk as the weekend gets closer so people should be careful about burning just in case anything gets away from them,” said Doyle.

By Sunday, rain is expected which will continue through Monday.
