Free transit offered for general voting in Smithers

Free transit is being offered from Telkwa to Witset on April 28th to help residents cast their ballot in the federal election.

This was agreed to by Smithers Council during tonight’s (Tuesday) meeting with any extra costs being covered by the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako.

Their original plan was to offer transit for 12 hours starting at 8:00 a.m. but was changed to 7:00 to better align with poll hours.

“If it ends right at poll closing and somebody’s voting then, we’re not providing them a ride home,” said Councillor Frank Wray.

Council changed their motion to provide transit on election day but did not provide exact times for the free period.

General voting hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
