Thousands of solidarity letters will be presented to Indigenous land defenders tomorrow. (Thursday)
This is part of Amnesty International’s Write for Rights campaign that encourages people to write letters, sign petitions, and send messages of support to individuals and communities whose rights are under attack
According to the organization, the defenders were criminalized for peacefully defending the Nation’s land and rights against the construction of the Coastal GasLink liquefied natural gas pipeline.
The Wet’suwet’en land defenders were one of nine cases selected last year for the campaign with over 26,000 letters being sent.
Letters, posters, and art sent to the defenders will be filled into a canoe that’s decorated at the event.
According to Amnesty, there were letters received from Nigeria, France, Taiwan, the Netherlands, Australia, Japan, the U.S., the U.K., and more.
The ceremony will take place tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 in Smithers’ Bovil Square.
