NWCC turns down Enbridge donation

The Northwest Community College has decided not to accept Enbridge money for a school bursary.

Chair of the college board, Rhoda Witherly says Enbridge had donated $15,000 to be used in six bursaries of $2,500.

She says the college originally announced the funding in early March and students had started applying for the bursaries but then the college board changed their minds and decided to return the money.

“I think that there were some concerns that there would be a perception that we were taking a stand on the Northern Gateway issue. And certainly that is not the intention of the college and we don’t have a stand on that.”

Witherly says for student hoping to benefit from the Enbridge bursary money, there will likely still be a way to apply for directly through the company.

She says the college board is now reviewing its policy on donations.
