Government Street multi-use path starts construction

Construction has started on more upgrades to Government Street near Third Avenue in Burns Lake.

Work started on Monday to create a multi-use path beside the roadway.

“It actually started back in 2018 when [the village] came up with an active transportation plan which set out segments of sidewalk projects we were going to work on over the years,” said Director of Public Works Dale Ross.

This project comes with a price tag of $1.1 million, with about half being covered by a provincial Active Transportation Grant.

“We hope to be done in about eight to ten weeks then after that we have the asphalt side of it,” Ross added.

The village is also installing new water valves, supply saddles, curbs, gutters, roadwork, and sidewalks.

A new parking lot and improvements to the intersection are in the works as well.

“Because it’s a main throughfare for a lot of foot traffic and traffic, we’re going to do this in three different sections to minimize disruptions as much as we can,” said Ross.

3,200 meters of sidewalk has been built since the active transportation plan was created.

“It makes a huge difference when you’re driving up and down the avenues, Center Street, or the downtown area. You see more and more people using the sidewalks and walking around,” he said.

With the plan, they hope to create a transportation network through the village that connects to the Boer Mountain trails.
