Traffic cameras spark discussion for Smithers council

Smithers council discussed the possibility of adding intersection safety cameras to traffic lights along Highway 16 during tonight’s (Tuesday) meeting.

This was brought up by Councilor Sam Raven with the recommendation for staff to inquire about the Intersection Safety Camera Program. (ISCP)

The idea of adding cameras to intersections wasn’t something that sat well with Councilor Frank Wray.

“I know we’re asking for more information, but the cameras are really going to be my stop. I would prefer to see us do an enforcement list before we go straight to them,” he said.

Raven clarified having an enforcement list would be the first step with getting the cameras likely taking some time.

“The other thing is all of the places they do have these cameras set up, there is significant signage that focuses on education rather than straight to enforcement,” she added.

Councilor Genivieve Paterson recommended a future Commitee of the Whole meeting could be dedicated to pedestrian and traffic safety in town.

Another clarification made by Raven is the town must reach out to the ISCP as they need to be invited to the municipality.

Council voted in favour to write a letter requesting more information about the program with Wray opposed.
