The annual Goodbye Fry event was held on Saturday at the Buck Creek Hatchery and Nature Centre.
This was the nineth year the event was held and saw a record 175 people visit the facility.
“The whole nature centre was packed with people having fun playing in the sandbox, releasing fish, taking a look at aquatic insects, games, and it was really fun” said Cindy Verbeek, Northern BC Project Manager for Arocha.
It is held to celebrate the release of their coho salmon fry into Buck Creek that were raised at the hatchery.
120 fish were released by the hatchery during the event for a total of 6,800 this year.
“We invite the community to come and learn about salmon, their life cycle, care for the river, and care for salmon,” Verbeek said.
Feedback has been positive with a BBQ happening, and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans also attended.
She hopes to scale the event up next year to celebrate its 10th anniversary.
