Smithers RCMP officers to soon adorn body-worn cameras

RCMP officers in Smithers will soon be wearing a new piece of equipment while on duty.

Those at the detachment have recently completed training for wearing body-worn cameras.

Police said they will help provide transparency, while offering a first-person view of what a police officer encounters often in highly tense situations.

The cameras also aim to resolve public complaints more quickly, improve interactions between the public and police, and improve evidence gathering.

“We welcome the use of body-worn cameras because we want the public to see how we handle the often complex and challenging situations we face every day,” said Acting Detachment Commander Seargeant Ryan Law.

Mounties added some of the situations where cameras will be recording include during use-of-force incidents, arrests, victim/witness interviews, or other interactions where recording is permitted.

More information about the body-worn camera initiative can be found on the RCMP’s website.
