Local MP Nathan Cullen spoke to Canada’s commitment to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius today.
Calling from the COP21 in Paris this morning, Cullen says this will mean a lot less Northwest oil to achieve this goal.
“It’s going to take a lot of effort just to make our economy less polluting. You just cannot be making raw bitumen pipelines at the same time.”
He believes it would be impossible to grow these projects without hurting the environment.
“If you’re going to grow that much in carbon pollution, where are you going to make up for it?”
He also shared his thoughts on the first phase into Canada’s missing and murdered aboriginal women.
The Federal Government shared its plans Wednesday to meet with families and women’s groups to solidify an effective plan of action.
Cullen feels it’s about time something is done.
“It’s really really concerning first found it’s way to having a national inquiry on missing salmon in the Fraser River before we had one for missing and murdered aboriginal girls.”
He says he’s impatient but believes this is a step in the right direction.
“Make sure you’ve got everybody in the tent and people are happy about the process, and that’s fine, but if we’re still talking about the first phase three months from now I’ll be a little less sympathetic. I want us to get going.”
The Canadian’s Liberals plan one to take about two months.
