Skeena – Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen has proposed a trial & error approach to new democracy.
The NDP’s democratic reform critic believes introducing a new system could be shunned if not understood.
“Test driving” a system would allow Canadians to see which systems work and decide what to keep.
“If you’re driving a car that you like, okay, but someone shows you this great new car that does all sorts of things but is never something you’ve seen before, before you buy it you’re probably going to hop in it and take it for a spin, then maybe make the commitment or back to what you had,” he says, “so, I think for a voting system, this would be worthwhile.”
The “first-past-the-post” method has been the only voting system Canada has ever used.
His proposed time frame would be one or two federal elections.
