3 wins guarantees CIHL top spot for Steelheads

A win in Kitimat Saturday and two more next weekend would spell a first place CIHL finish for Smithers.

Following Terrace’s 3-2 loss in Kitimat on January 3rd, the River Kings best possible finish would be 24 points should the team win its final two games.

Williams Lake Stampeders have one game left; should they win, they will finish with 26 points. Smithers won the only matchup 3-2 on December 6th and thus holds the tiebreaker.

It’s a lot to think about and head coach Tom DeVries doesn’t want to get ahead of himself.

“One game at a time, right? As soon as you lose a game you lose your chance again but it looks like an interesting finish here,” he says.

That’s not to say he isn’t confident in his team.

“I think we can do it.”

Saturday will also be the team’s final road game of the season.

Prince Rupert will play two games in Smithers on January 16th and 17th.
