Syrian Families could be arriving in coming weeks

Two Syrian refugee families could be in Smithers very shortly.

The Bulkley Valley Refugee Sponsorship group recently announced its raised $81,000 for new families had both their applications approved. The two Syrian families could arrive by the end of February.

Group spokesperson Pauline Mahoney believes they will be welcomed with open arms.

“Everywhere I turn, people are so thrilled that somehow our community has been able to respond to what’s been a very, very tragic situation,” she says, “It’s a drop in the bucket, but for those families who we bring here, it’s an opportunity for their futures.”

The group is also looking for clothing donations for children aged one, two, five, eight, twelve, and fifteen. This included winter clothing (jackets, toques/hats, gloves, snow pants, thermals, snow boots, etc).

They will also be accepting bedding, household items, and accommodation invitations.
