Smithers first official lane way house is under construction after council recently approved the secondary units.
Homeowner, Hayley Catton says they wanted her mother in law to move in with them and when council approved lane way housing in their zone they jumped at the chance.
“We always wanted to do a little rental thing, it just kinda fell into place for us. It’s pretty nice that the town has decided to do lane way houses and are giving out permits for it. It helps out.”
She says the 460 square foot cottage features a small living room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom and vaulted ceilings.
Lane way housing has been promoted as a way to increase density, rental and seniors housing in communities and Smithers has decided to approve the secondary houses in the R2 zone close to downtown.
