Burns Lake aiming to avoid tax increase in annual budget

The Village of Burns Lake is working towards finalizing this year’s budget.

Mayor Luke Strimbold says they are striving to keep the tax increase to zero. “That’s many things as we recognize that we have families that are potentially in tough economic times. But we are also recognizing that we really need to control our spending.”

However, there are a handful of spaces in the budget that will be getting a funding boost.

One of those is animal control, which Strimbold recognized as a “challenge’ in Burns lake.

He says a program which sees veterinarians travel to Burns Lake to help spay, neuter and control the stray animal population in town will be getting a bit more help

“We are adding money into support that process. It’s a spay and neuter program but it’s also education of how to take care of you per properly and to have a health lifestyle with animal and your family.”

Council is also debating repaving several of the main streets in town, including 8th Avenue.

$2,500 dollars will also be spent on 5 plaques to mark historical buildings. “We have some really unique heritage buildings, that we just want to make sure we formally recognize.” Strimbold said

The village is also making a push to make sure all municipal buildings have leases or rental agreements signed for those that use them, to cover expenses cush as snow clearing and garbage pick up.
