Steelheads win Lightning Cup after perfect weekend

With another successful weekend, the Smithers Steelheads have claimed the CIHL’s top spot.

The team extended its 9 game winning streak by beating the Prince Rupert Rampage twice over the weekend. They won 8-6 Saturday and 9-4 on Sunday.

Head coach Tom DeVries says it feels good to come out on top.

“It feels great. [We had a] couple of excellent games this weekend, especially Saturday night that was a back and forth game. They gave it all and we just did awesome and won the games. It was a great weekend, a great year, and we’re looking forward to playoffs,” he says.

Heading into the first round, the fish will play the Kitimat Ice Demons. The two teams split the season series two wins apiece, and coach Tom DeVries isn’t taking them lightly.

“They’ve had the same players for years and they’re good. We just never know, playoffs you just never know. You run into a hot goalie – we lost to them once because of that – so you just never know.”

Game 1 will be in Kitimat on January 30th.
