New Hazelton RCMP Cpl. Donovan issued is statement following a phone scam affecting local residents:
“Please be aware of a phone scam that is currently circulating. One variation of the scam is that the caller claims to be from the Canada Revenue Agency and may assert that they have a warrant for the victim’s arrest due to an outstanding tax balance owed. They demand that money be electronically transferred to vacate the warrant.
“A second variation is that the victim receives a call from someone claiming to be a police officer from the local Detachment. If the victim has caller ID, the Detachment phone number may be displayed. The caller claims to have a warrant and needs money electronically transferred to have it removed.
“If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the RCMP demanding money, it is a fraudulent call. If you receive a call from someone claiming to represent the CRA and informing you that you owe money, it is recommended that you hang up and call your local CRA office and speak to a representative.
“If you have been a victim of this scam, or wish to view other scams circulating, you can visit www.antifraudcentre.ca to report it, or call 1-888-495-8501.”
