Aid to Houston’s Young families

Young families in Houston will soon get a helping hand.

The BC government is providing the District with funding for a new Early Years Centre.

In its first phase, the money will be used for a mobile outreach worker, which Houston’s Dze L K’ant Friendship Centre Aboriginal Early Development Coordinator Kate Langham says will meet with families and uncover local needs.

“Hearing first hand what their needs are and then being able to connect those with services that are available. if those services are not available, then they will be doing the duty of recording that, bringing that information back so we can lobby to increase services,” she says.

The Province would like these centres to help families with kids under 6 with drop-in daycares, health clinics, and parent education.

Houston, Burns Lake, and 19 other communities recently received funding for Centres.

Houston’s outreach worker will begin on April 1st.
