Houston Road Dust Advisory over; con’t in Smithers, Burns Lake

Improving air and changing weather conditions have swept away particulate on Houston streets.

The Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the Northern Health Authority, ended the District’s Road Dust Advisory Wednesday morning.

Elsewhere, the advisories in Burns Lake and Smithers are still in effect. Burns Lake’s began Monday morning and Smithers’ was issued early yesterday.

The provincial air quality objective for this type of particulate (PM10) is 50 micrograms per cubic metre (μg/m3) averaged over 24 hours. As of 9 AM Wednesday, the 24-hour average along Hwy 16 was 92 μg/m3 in Burns Lake and 52 μg/m3 in Smithers.

People with serious medical issues are advised to stay inside until these advisories end.

The Ministry of Environment has recommended these tips to reduce health risks:

• Avoid roads with heavy vehicle traffic.
• Continue to manage medical conditions such as asthma, chronic respiratory disease andheart failure. If symptoms continue to be bothersome, seek medical attention.
• Use common sense regarding outdoor physical activity; if your breathing becomes difficultor uncomfortable, stop or reduce the activity.
• Maintaining good overall health is a good way to reduce health risks resulting from short-
term exposure to air pollution.
