Air Worsens; BL Road Dust Advisory continued

Today, The Ministry of Environment continued Tuesday’s Road Dust Advisory for Burns Lake.

The provincial air quality objective for PM10 (airborne solid or liquid droplets with diameters of 2.5 μm or less), is 50 micrograms per cubic metre (μg/m3) averaged over 24 hours. As of 8 AM on Wednesday, the average concentration of PM10 in Burns Lake was 80 μg/m3, up from 53 μg/m3 on Tuesday.

The particulate is expected to stick around until precipitation or a street cleaner washes away winter traction material. Levels tend to be highest around busy roads and industrial operations.

The Ministry says people with chronic underlying medical conditions shouldn’t do any serious exercise near busy roads until the advisory is lifted.

Exposure can be a severe issue for the elderly, diabetics, and those with lung or heart disease.

At this time, other parts of the Bulkley Valley and Lakes are not facing dangerous levels of this particulate.
