New Arena getting new “Zamboni”

Hockey players and figure skaters will soon notice a new vehicle doing laps around their arena.

Smithers Council agreed at Tuesday night’s meeting to order a new, $190,000 resurfacer. This will replace the older, propane-powered vehicle in the new arena.

Mayor Taylor Bachrach says the new Zamboni will be good for the ice and the air.

“This replacement is not only scheduled in our Equipment Replacement Program, but it will also allow us to use electric ice resurfacers in both arenas, which improves indoor air quality and has a number of other benefits,” he says.

Staff says the electric vehicle will reduce greenhouse emissions in the New Arena by eight tons per year.

Town Staff will sell the older vehicle.
