Telkwa Council taking road dust into its own hands

Telkwa is taking it upon itself to take care of its road dust.

Each year, the Village hires a contractor to clean up the street. This often lands Telkwa on a waiting list while dust becomes an air quality and respiratory concern for you.

In response, Mayor Darcy Repen says the Village is looking to buy its own dust management equipment. This includes storage for the calcium chloride use. Village workers could also target specific areas and work on a smaller scale than a contractor.

We’re working towards a system where we can bring it in-house and then we’ll have control of the timing. As soon as the roads are dry we’ll be able to grade and apply it,” he says.

Village Staff is currently comparing costs, but Repen says money isn’t the only priority.

“The big thing is that the health implications if we’re not able to have a timely application, have to be taken into account when we’re talking about costs and the debate about whether to do it. We don’t want to have our residents suffering for any amount of time at all.”

The Village is weighing its finances options before making a decision.

Due to an early Spring, he adds the Village may not have this in place this year.
