Minor Hockey Championships Wrap up

Minor hockey teams from across the North represented the area well over the past few days.

Vanderhoof earned gold at the B.C. Hockey Bantam Tier 3 championships in Smithers. The team had a 3-2 overtime win over Whitehorse in the final game after they outscored North Shore 6-2 in the semis.

In chronological order, Vanderhoof beat South Okanagan 6-3 Sunday, lost 4-3 to Whitehorse Monday, tied Arbutus Club 9-9 Tuesday (1-1-1 in round robin), beat North Shore 6-2 in the semi-final game and beat Whitehorse 3-2 in gold medal game in OT.

Host Smithers Storm finished 4th in the nine-team tournament
after dropping the Bronze Medal game 5-2 to North Shore.

In order, Smithers lost 3-1 to North Shore Sunday, beat Tri Port 10-4 Sunday, beat Dawson Creek 3-2 Monday, beat Cranbrook 7-1 Tuesday. (3-1 in round robin), lost 7-4 to Whitehorse in the semi-final game, and lost 5-2 to North Shore in bronze medal game.

In other Provincial Minor Hockey Championships:

Smithers earned bronze at the Midget Tier 3 in Gibsons after a
5 – 4 victory over Alberni Valley in the third-place game. The Smithers team went 4-0 in the round robin before they fell
4-2 to Whistler in the semi-finals.

Smithers beat Sunshine Coast Sunday, Kelowna 6-2 Monday, Cranbrook 6-3 Tuesday, and Dawson Creek 2-1 Wednesday
(4-0 in the round robin). In the semi-final, Smithers lost 4-2 to Whistler but topped Alberni Valley 5-4 for bronze.

Burns Lake finished in third place out of six teams with a 2-2-1 record at the Midget Tier 4 in Port Alberni. Burns Lake lost its final round robin game 7-2 to Prince Rupert.

Burns Lake beat Coquitlam 8-2 Sunday then Surrey 8-2 Monday, tied Alberni Valley 2-2 Monday, and lost 3-2 to Windermere Tuesday and 7-2 to Prince Rupert Wednesday.
