Skeena – Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen pointed out the large deficit was the government’s third broken campaign promises on spending. These included keeping the deficit around $10 billion, to get out of deficit after 3 years, and to keep borrowed money proportioned to the size of our economy
He was happy to see money going to First Nations communities, which included $40 million to missing and murdered indigenous women. However, he was concerned about backloaded promises – that plan for major action when Trudeau could be out of power – and called them “cynical”.
He says the clean energy was overhyped and mostly announced. He says that msot spending initiatives were just called “green” without a real plan to better the environment. On the environemntally-friendly front, he says Canada is still behind both the USA and Europe.
On the lines of social infrasturatuce, he says there was way less money spent than originally commitited. Initially, he asys Trudeau would spend more %$5.5 billion in 4 years but will spend less than $3.5 billion on a longer period of time.
There could be big benefits to those in Northern BC accepting or looking for employment insruance. Cullen is happy the gorvernemnt has extended benefits by five weeks and cut wait times in half. However, he says the Liberals will take $7 billion out of the fund over 3 years.
He finished by saying that time will tell how effective all this spending will be.
