Fire Centre urging caution while open burning

Be careful if you’re going to do any open burning.

The Northwest Fire Centre says nicer weather and higher temperatures are drying out plants and pose a wildfire risk.

If you’re going to burn, the Centre recommends you have enough people, water, and tools on hand in case of an emergency.

It also suggests burning in calm conditions, creating a fireguard and consider a few smaller piles instead of one big one.

Never leave a fire unattended and make sure it’s completely extinguished before leaving.

Always make sure to check with local fire department, municipality or regional district to check if there are any open burning restrictions or bylaws in effect.

“FireSmart” activities are encouraged this time of year to mitigate wildfire risk. Rural property owners should read the updated Homeowner’s FireSmart Manual.
