Council decided shares will stay about the same as last year, with the average bump of about $58.
Mayor Taylor Bachrach says it’s a modest increase and encourages people to take a look at the budget.
“Smithers is very fortunate as a community. We have really solid infrastructure compared to a lot of communities, and we have a huge number of amenities, so I think, generally, people see a lot of value in their municipal tax contribution,” he says.
A report brought forth by staff says the shares create an “‘equitable’ overall increase to most assessment classes in terms of tax revenues to be collected,” and is the most beneficial to residential property owners. However, it’s the least helpful to those who own heavy industrial and not-for-profit properties.
