Alternate Approval will decide Terminal funding

Council wants anyone against loaning money for the airport terminal upgrades to speak up.

Smithers has two-thirds of the 6 million dollars needed to modernize the terminal but it still needs another 2 million.

Instead of having an expensive town-wide vote, Council decided to have an “Alternate Approval Process.” Unless 10% of residents don’t want the Town to borrow the money, it will move forward with the loan application.

Mayor Taylor Bachrach says the project will put bathrooms past the security gates, and allow larger planes to land, among other major improvements

“The project really is about managing that asset so it’s around and continues to serve the community into the future,” he says.

Council decided on the AAP instead of a referendum, which takes longer and would cost $15,000.

The two will advertise the process twice. If you don’t want the Town to borrow the money, you’ll have 30 days from the second ad date to voice your displeasure.
