College receives provincial funding for Aboriginal learners

Northwest Community College campuses are among some provincial post secondary institutions to receive funding from the province for Aboriginal learning.

NWCC’s Irlanda Price says the college will receive over $590,000 as part of the Aboriginal Service Plan which supports programs and activities that enhance Aboriginal training and education in college and university.

She says $200,000 will go to student support programs while the rest will be used for in-community programs.

“For us as an institution we really value the relationship that we have with our Aboriginal communities and we realize that there are some barriers for learners to leave their communities so accessing education has been a barrier. So our philosophy is that we meet our learners where they are and we go to them.”

The province announced $3.9 million in Aboriginal learning funding this week.
