Stats Canada encouraging residents to complete Census forms

A $500 fine or three months behind bars possibly awaits anyone who does not fill out the 2016 Census.

Kwong Wong the Assistant Director for BC/Yukon states your response is crucial in order to carry out necessary services.

“The responses will ensure your community has the information it needs for planning services such as child care, schooling, family services, housing, and skills training for employment.”

Reminder letters will be sent out on May 11th for people who have not filed their Census and then the following week a questionnaire will be mailed out for those who do not have internet or want to respond via a paper questionnaire.

It has proven to be a crucial resource for provincial funding and the most recent federal election.

“In the last five years, the provincial funding has amounted to $300 billion dollars and also the redistribution of the electoral boundaries with 300 seats added in the House of Commons for the 2015 election based on the 2011 count.”

The Long Form Census also returns in 2016.

One in four households in Canada will receive it and will feature additional questions that will enable community planners to ensure services.
