Houston Farmer’s Market Stays Put

The Farmers market in Houston will be staying at Steelhead Park after council decided not to move it to the library.

Library Director at the Houston Public Library Tony McKilligan was hanging on a decision from council.

“We saw it as an opportunity to do some great fundraising for the library. We also saw it as an opportunity to expand the market for the communities,” says McKilligan.

She says rules laid out by the province that limits vendors to just local are keeping them from joining the farmer’s market. She wanted council to change that.

“We saw it as a mutually beneficial endeavour for the library and the local economy but the town has denied our request.”

She says the library will have to sort out its financial situation in the coming weeks.

The hurdles council faced in moving the market to the library was changing a leasing agreement and business licensing.

If the farmers market was run out of the library as requested, it would have to operate as a flea market.
