The first-past-the-post system of voting could be changing if the Liberal government has their way. Skeena and Bulkley Valley Member of Parliament Nathan Cullen doesn’t like what he calls a stacked committee.
“you try to not make it non-partisan. You try to get the parties together and work together. If it’s just one party coming up with how to vote and who votes, that parties going to design it so they win. And the liberals have a preferred system,” says Cullen.
Cullen agrees that the election process needs an overhaul, but isn’t impressed with the Liberals who are doing it without a citizens assembly.
“So the more pressure that builds…the greater the chances that the Liberals will back down and listen to reason and do something that the public will actually support.”
Online voting, mandatory voting, ranked ballots and proportional representation are some of the changes the Liberals are pushing for.
