Mining exploration is a massive part of the north-west BC economy. And over the next three days, the Minerals North Conference will be showcasing the industry.
The industry is worth over 270 million dollars in 2015 – half of which is in the north-west.
Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson wants more government oversight with aboriginal land title and environmental enforcement.
“If you look at those two things together there’s a lot of work to do from government. I think that has to take place so we can make the most out of the minerals in the hills around us,” says Donaldson.
He says that will help boost public and investor confidence, ultimately strengthening the industry.
“In the northwest, we’re at the forefront of some mines opening. Red Chris Mine has opened, and we’ll be seeing Bruce Jack Mine opening soon. That means a lot of jobs locally and a lot of supply companies get work from that.”
The conference starts Wednesday and ends on Friday at the Smithers Civic Arena.
