Third Ave is officially a thirty zone

The signs are almost all up and Third Avenue in Smithers is now a 30 per hour zone.

Director of Corporate Services, Susan Basset says the change was made by council due to the new bike lanes along the road.

She says there will be a short grace period before speeding tickets start getting handed out.

“the RCMP are assisting us in an education blitz and they will be rolling into full enforcement on July 21st. Currently I think they are running a speed watch campaign for visibility.”

According to the RCMP the minimum fine for driving 50 km/hr or so in the new 30 zone is $138 and maximum fines for excessive speed can range from over $350 to impoundment of the vehicle.
