Horse shot in Smithers

Smithers RCMP are investigating a mysterious shooting.

Sgt. Kirsten Marshall says RCMP were called to a property at Cote Road last Wednesday to reports that a horse had been shot.

“An officer attended the scene and confirmed that a horse had been shot in its right, front leg and the bullet appeared to be of a smaller calibre, possibly a .22.”

She says a vet examined the animal and determined it was safer to leave the bullet in rather than attempt to remove it.

RCMP don’t know how the shooting occurred saying it is possible someone was target shooting and not aware of the background or possibly someone was trying to scare another animal away and hit the horse by accident.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Smithers RCMP detachment.
