Houston could be facing some struggles when it comes to people accessing fresh food with the closing of a grocery store in Late June.
Loblaw confirmed the closing of Supervalu last week.
Councillor Jonathan Van Barneveld is optimistic.
“While we have short-term pain, there will really be some long-term gain with getting a new grocery store in town,” says Van Barneveld.
He says there’s a lot of talk about ride shares through social media to fill that gap in food services in the community to help those that don’t have vehicle get food.
“Already we’re seeing people banding togeather,” says Van Barneveld. “I’ve heard stories of even Smithers offering volunteers to bring groceries in for seniors.”
So far, there’s no news of any company taking Supervalu’s place in the community.
Loblaw will also be closing the SuperValu in Fraser Lake.
