A record amount of black bear cubs have been rescued this spring by the Northern Wildlife Society

This spring has been a nearly record breaking year for black bear cub rescues according to The Northern Lights Wildlife Society outside of Smithers.

This year they have 16 black bear cubs that were rescued.

Manager and co-founder of Northern Lights Angelika Langen says feeding the cubs is a hefty cost.

“We have more than 4 times the bears we usually have and 4 times the cost. We’re a little overwhelmed, but I’m sure we can make it work, we always have in the past,” says Langen.

She says it costs 50 dollars a day to feed the cubs. The 16 cubs will have to feed on milk until about August.

“We’re really scrambling because usually we get 2 or 3 that young. They’re a lot of work because they’re still all nursing, so we need a lot of milk and formula to keep them all alive.”

Langen says they usually rescue bears in the fall.

“We’re going to be reaching out to the public this spring.”
