Electoral Reform is a step closer to changing the Canadian voting system after the Liberals endorsed an NDP democratic reform proposal from Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen.

“Do what’s never been done in this country. We’ve never done this…we’ve never changed our voting system so fundamentally,” says Cullen.

Changing a voting system that Cullen says now will fairly represent members across party lines to sit on the committee based on the last election.

This means we’ll have five Liberals, three Conservatives, two NDPs, one Bloc Quebecois and a Green Party member sitting on the 12-member committee tasked with studying the voting system.

Cullen is happy the Liberals finally accepted it.

“I think a lot of people are open to this idea on all sides of the aisle. We got support from Liberals, Conservatives, Green and Bloc. That’s not every day.”

The committee could start as soon as the end of the month. Cullen says town hall meetings could start up in August or September to collect public input.
