Co-op’s Fort McMurray donation drive raises more than $15,000 for Red Cross

In yet another example of heart-warming generosity in the face of disaster, the people of north central BC opened their wallets to help the people of Fort McMurray.

On May 5th, the Vanderhoof and District Co-op began accepting donations for the Red Cross. It promised to match donations made at any of its locations. When it closed its donation campaign on May 30, the total was impressive.

“We collected over $7,700 dollars from our members and customers that came through all of our locations,” says marketing coordinator Renee Dick. “The exact figure was $7,712.97. By matching that donation, the Co-op is making a donation to the Red Cross of $15,425.95.”

Dick says they were surprised and grateful for the support the donation drive received.

“We were collecting donations through all of our locations in Quesnel, Prince George, Vanderhoof, Houston and Terrace. We were just blown away by the generosity. We had so many people come in and it just goes to show the communities we are a part of and how much these people care.”

The Co-op also donated nearly 800 litres of fuel to volunteers who travelled to help Fort McMurray.
