Smithers hopes to work with air Canada ahead of planned improvements, with air-fare costs on the mind

Ahead of the airport modernization project, Smithers Mayor Taylor Bachrach met with air Canada yesterday, discussing the future success of the airport.

“One of the most frequent concerns I’ve heard from residents is that it costs more to fly out of Smithers than it does Terrace. That was one of the primary concerns we raised with Air Canada,” says Bachrach. He says the town is working on a long-term relationship with Air Canada.

The town will be borrowing 2 million dollars to top up the cost of the modernization project to upgrade the airport. The plan is to pay the two million with airport fees.

The open house for the public to allow the borrowing started on Wednesday.

The town will be selecting a design team for the project next week with construction planned for next April.
