Aboriginal Day at Bovill Square in Smithers tomorrow

Aboriginal day kicks off tomorrow at Bovill Square in downtown Smithers with live entertainment and some food.

This is the first time the event will be held at Bovill square.

“It’s a four-hour event that starts at noon. We usually expect 300 to 500 people to show up,” says One of the organizers, and town councillors, Bill Goodacre.

Goodacre says the event is funded by grants and donations.

The town of Smithers made a one thousand dollar donation to the event with 900 coming from a federal grant “plus a contribution of 500 in cash plus some volunteer time from the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs, provincially,” says Goodacre.

He says the whole event costs about 3 thousand dollars.

“And this year the library is involved – they haven’t before…(they’ll) be setting up some events for kids.”
