Possible School threat unsubstantiated

Last Thursday, the Smithers RCMP received tips on a possible threat to one of the schools in the area. It was a day before Smithers Secondary School held their vigil for the Orlando shooting.

Smithers RCMP investigated with a team of officers and were not able to substantiate the threat.

The vigil was scheduled on Friday because of unforeseen circumstances and went ahead anyway.

Perry Rath, the teacher sponsor for the Gender Sexuality Alliance, explains the purpose of the vigil.

“Even though we’re a small community here in Northern BC it felt like yea, smithers – we’ve got an active GSA here – and we’re recognised provincially for some of the things we’re doing here. Yeah, we’re part of this larger network,’ says Rath.

The vigil had 50 lit candles to represent all the victims of the Orlando shooting.

Students and community members were in attendance for the sombre event were the names of each victim were read out.
